Family Focus, founded in 1977, was the first group home in New Jersey for young people with autism. Family Focus at Mountainview, opened in 1983, also provides services to adults with autism. In addition, PCDI provides supervised apartments for adults with autism who have acquired greater levels of independence. The adults in PCDI’s residential programs participate in family-style activities designed to teach receptive and expressive language, recreation and leisure activities, home-living skills, health and hygiene, and personal safety.
Staff members offer science-based intervention and are accountable for intervention effects; program personnel accept responsibility for helping people with autism achieve positive, socially significant behavior change. As a result, PCDI’s residential programs enable individuals with autism to live productive, active lives connected to the larger community. This model of professionally-staffed, family-style treatment has been shared with many other agencies in the United States and internationally.
